Peripatetic Cosmology
Aristotle, the renowned Greek philosopher, researcher, reasoner, and writer, was born at Stagirus in 384 BC as the son of a physician. He studied under Plato in Athens and subsequently taught there from 367 to 347 BC. After spending three years at the court of a former pupil in Asia Minor and some time at Mitylene, he was appointed by King Philip of Macedon as the tutor of his son, Alexander. Following Philip’s death in 336 BC, Aristotle became the head of his own school, the Lyceum, known as the “Peripatetics” in Athens. Due to the anti-Macedonian sentiment following Alexander’s death in 323 BC, he withdrew to Chalcis in Euboea, where he passed away in 322 BC.
Although nearly all of Aristotle's works prepared for publication are lost, the invaluable ones that still exist include lecture materials, notes, and memoranda, of which some are considered spurious. These works can be categorized as follows:
I Practical: Nicomachean Ethics; Great Ethics (Magna Moralia); Eudemian Ethics; Politics; Economics (on the good of the family); On Virtues and Vices.
II Logical: Categories; Analytics (Prior and Posterior); Interpretation; Refutations used by Sophists; Topica.
III Physical: Twenty-six works (some suspect) including astronomy, generation and destruction, the senses, memory, sleep, dreams, life, facts about animals, etc.
IV Metaphysics: on being as being.
V Art: Rhetoric and Poetics.
VI Other works: including the Constitution of Athens, with additional works of doubtful authorship.
VII Fragments: of various works such as dialogues on philosophy and literature; and treatises on rhetoric, politics, and metaphysics.
The Loeb Classical Library edition of Aristotle is available in twenty-three volumes.
