Description

The crocus bulb is sold loose, per piece. It is cultivated in sunny or semi-shaded areas, in soils with good drainage. The crocus blooms in spring, allowing it to be planted even under deciduous trees. However, planting crocuses under evergreen trees is not recommended, as their dense shade prevents access to necessary sunlight.

Spring-blooming bulbs are planted in the fall. In cold regions, planting should be done earlier. Autumn-blooming bulbs are planted in spring. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 5 centimeters and 5-8 centimeters apart, with the pointed end facing upwards. Fertilizing at the time of planting is not necessary, although a little organic compost can help.

The crocus bulbs "divide," allowing for separation and thinning to prevent overcrowding and degeneration. If the crocuses stop blooming properly after one or two years, dividing the bulbs will enhance their flowering. The best time for division is after flowering, when the foliage has yellowed and dried.

After flowering, the foliage remains lively for a while, then gradually yellow and fall off. It is important to ensure the leaves are completely yellow before removing them. If grown in beds, they can wilt naturally, but if planted in grass, they may be difficult to spot as their leaves yellow 6 weeks after flowering.
