Description & Specifications

SEVEN AGAINST THEBES AESCHYLUS, The History of the Work

The conflict of the sons of Oedipus for the throne of Thebes, in Aeschylus' quintessential war drama. Eteocles refuses to hand over power to Polynices, and the latter leads a foreign army against his homeland. At the seventh gate of Thebes, the two brothers confront each other and kill one another to fulfill their father's curse "to divide the kingdom with iron".

Aeschylus is a great poet who stands at the beginning of the formation of ancient Greek dramatic poetry. His works address a variety of themes: social, poetic, metaphysical. All of his works are presented with a solid structure and lyrical outbursts. From his rich oeuvre, the seven tragedies presented in this series have been preserved. Each book includes the ancient Greek text, its translation, scholarly comments on the work, an analysis of the work, themes-questions for further processing of the text, an anthology of the work, bibliography related to the work, and an index of terms and names.
