Winter was coming, and people would get cold, especially those who had no home, as they had fled due to the conflicts in the countries where they lived, or because their homes, and sometimes their cities or villages, had been destroyed. We wanted to draw attention to these people and raise money to help them stay warm.
I turned to social media and asked people about their own memories of warmth. Tens of thousands responded, each with a special memory. I took their memories and began to weave them into a poem, as best as I could. I chose themes from the responses I received. It was a poem about coming in from the cold, about physical warmth and the warmth of family, friends, and safety.
The poem was woven and became a long, green scarf. We made it into a film. The wars that had led people to flee did not stop. In fact, new wars began, and more people left the places they had lived their entire lives, taking with them whatever they could carry. Once again, winter was approaching.
I gave the poem to the UN Refugee Agency, and they, along with the publishing house Bloomsbury, and the wonderful illustrators of this book, present it to you, hoping that it may help some people who have lost their home, or even their homeland, to stay warm this winter and in the winters to come.
