I bought the Mac Mini M4 (256/16) in March 2026 for €665. Along with it, I bought the AOC Agon U27G4R 4K monitor and the UGreen CM841 dock station/hub.
1. MacOS.
At first, switching to the macOS environment after 22 years of using Windows was a gamble for me. The setup was done very comfortably and quickly. I got used to the environment and the keyboard shortcuts in a week (and that’s saying a lot). I easily remapped my keyboard keys to Mac keys (e.g. Alt to Command) with the Karabiner app (free). macOS is simple, beautiful, and comfortable to use, especially if you work a lot with local files—it really makes things easy. Installing apps and programs is truly ridiculous. The best part? On macOS, if you search for something, like you do in Windows, you actually find it! Of course, if you have iOS devices, the integration with the Mac Mini is amazing.
2. Noise.
It is truly silent. I had seen reviews saying the same and thought they were exaggerating. When we say you can’t hear anything, you can’t hear anything. In reality, the fans just run at low speeds. You can easily monitor and change their behavior with the Macs Fan Control app (free). Also, you can monitor the machine’s temperatures with the Stats app (free). With bioinformatics programs open at the same time, Microsoft VS Code, large datasets in Excel (which is fully available for macOS), a browser with dozens of tabs and videos playing, Apple Music, and other native apps, the average CPU temperature is around 50-60° without me changing the default fan settings.
3. Speed and performance
My daily routine includes all of the above, and yet it has not lagged anywhere, apart from some one-second hiccups that are mainly due to the apps rather than the machine itself. RAM is designed not to stay idle even when you have nothing open, yet it is not even half used under heavy load. Personally, since I keep all my photos in the cloud and I don’t play games, the 256GB capacity is enough for me (at least for now).
4. Size
It is extreme how all of the above happens from such a small machine. It’s funny how small it is. Its design is classically minimalist and beautiful, and I think it will fit with any setup.
5. Compatibility and Gaming
On the hardware side, I have a decade-old Cooler Master keyboard (Windows layout) and a Logitech mouse, both connected to the dock and recognized immediately without any problem or latency. I connected a second Lenovo ThinkVision monitor at 1080p and had no issues. In general, everything I’ve connected to the Mac Mini or the dock has worked right away. On the software side, the majority of apps (from Microsoft Office to programming software or specialized programs) are available for macOS. Even some that are not native run just fine using Rosetta (look it up). The Mac Mini is not advertised as a gaming PC, however we could say it is a very capable budget gaming machine with some compatibility issues. Very well-known e-sports games (e.g. LoL) are native on macOS and run flawlessly, but more niche games require more checking for compatibility.
6. Tips
Learn the shortcuts; they will make your life much easier. Take advantage of iCloud and experiment with macOS. From how to use hot corners to changing the screen colors when it gets dark, there are endless options. For example, you don’t need to double-click a file to see what it contains; just hold down the spacebar and macOS shows you a preview of the file. There is also debate about the resolution of the monitor you should connect to the Mac Mini—check out various tutorials on YouTube. Personally, I have my 4K monitor set to "Looks like 1080p" mode (i.e. retina). It is crystal clear and the icons or text are not large (I find the tutorials overly dramatic on this topic). If you can find a monitor that is an active hub, it will make your life much easier.
I find it extremely difficult to go back to a Windows PC. My experience is excellent and honestly, if you find it anywhere especially at this price, buy it without a second thought.

1. MacOS.
Αρχικά ήταν ένα στοίχημα για μένα να αλλάξω σε περιβάλλον macOS μετά από 22 χρόνια χρήσης Windows. Το setup έγινε πολύ άνετα και γρήγορα. Συνήθισα το περιβάλλον και τα keyboard shortcuts σε μια εβδομάδα (και πολύ λέω). Έκανα πανεύκολα remap τα κουμπιά του πληκτρολογίου μου σε mac (π.χ. το Alt σε Command) με την εφαρμογή Karabiner (δωρεάν). Το macOS είναι απλό, πανέμορφο και άνετο στη χρήση ειδικά αν δουλεύεις πολύ με local αρχεία σου λύνει τα χέρια. Η εγκατάσταση εφαρμογών και προγραμμάτων είναι πραγματικά γελοία. Το καλύτερο; Στο macOS αν κάνεις αναζήτηση για κάτι, όπως κάνεις search στα windows, το βρίσκεις όντως! Φυσικά αν έχεις συσκευές IOS η διασύνδεση με το Mac Mini είναι τρομερή.
2. Θόρυβος.
Είναι πραγματικά αθόρυβο. Έβλεπα reviews που έλεγαν το ίδιο και νόμιζα ότι υπερβάλλουν. Όταν λέμε δεν ακούγεται τίποτα, δεν ακούγεται τίποτα. Στην πραγματικότητα τα fans δουλεύουν απλά σε μικρές ταχύτητες. Μπορείς πανεύκολα να παρακολουθείς και να αλλάζεις τη λειτουργία τους με την εφαρμογή Macs Fan Control (δωρεάν). Ακόμη, μπορείς να παρακολουθείς τις θερμοκρασίες του μηχανήματος με την εφαρμογή Stats (δωρεάν). Έχοντας ταυτόχρονα ανοιχτά προγράμματα βιοπληροφορικής, Microsoft VS Code, μεγάλα dataset στο Excel (υπάρχει κανονικά για macOS), browser με δεκάδες καρτέλες και βίντεο να παίζουν, Apple Music και άλλες native εφαρμογές, η average θερμοκρασία του CPU είναι περίπου στους 50-60° χωρίς να πειράξω τις default ρυθμίσεις στα fans.
3. Ταχύτητα και επιδόσεις
Η καθημερινότητα μου περιέχει όλα αυτά που ανέφερα, κι όμως δεν έχει κολλήσει πουθενά, πέρα από κάποια κολληματάκια του ενός δευτερολέπτου που οφείλονται κυρίως στις εφαρμογές παρά στο ίδιο το μηχάνημα. Η RAM έχει σχεδιαστεί να μην μένει idle ακόμα και όταν δεν έχετε τίποτα ανοιχτό, παρόλα αυτά δεν χρησιμοποιείται ούτε η μισή σε heavy load. Προσωπικά επειδή έχω όλες τις φωτογραφίες μου σε cloud και δεν παίζω games, η χωρητικότητα των 256GB μου είναι αρκετή (τουλάχιστον για αρχή).
4. Μέγεθος
Είναι ακραίο το πως όλα τα παραπάνω συμβαίνουν από ένα τόσο μικρό μηχάνημα. Είναι αστείο το πόσο μικρό είναι. Ο σχεδιασμός του είναι κλασικά μινιμαλιστικός και όμορφος και νομίζω θα ταιριάξει με όλα τα setups.
5. Compatibility και Gaming
Από θέμα hardware, έχω ένα πληκτρολόγιο Cooler Master δεκαετίας (σε Windows layout) και ένα ποντίκι Logitech τα οποία συνδέονται στο dock και αναγνωρίζονται κατευθείαν χωρίς πρόβλημα ή latency. Σύνδεσα μια δεύτερη Lenovo Thinkvision οθόνη σε 1080p και δεν αντιμετώπισα κανένα θέμα. Γενικά ότι έχω συνδέσει στο Mac Mini ή στο dock έχει δουλέψει με την πρώτη. Από θέμα software, η πλειοψηφία των εφαρμογών (από Microsoft Office μέχρι software προγραμματισμού ή εξειδικευμένα προγράμματα) είναι διαθέσιμες για macOS. Ακόμα και κάποιες που δεν είναι native, τρέχουν μια χαρά με τη χρήση Rosetta (ψάξτε το). Τo Mac Mini δεν διαφημίζεται σαν ένα gaming PC, παρόλα αυτά θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε ότι είναι πολύ ικανό budget gaming μηχάνημα με κάποια compatibility issues. Πολύ γνωστά e-sports games (π.χ. LoL) είναι native σε macOS και τρέψουν αψεγάδιαστα, αλλά πιο ψαγμένα παιχνίδια θέλουν ψάξιμο ως προς το compatibility περισσότερο.
6. Tips
Μάθετε τα shortcuts, θα σας λύσουν τα χέρια. Αξιοποιήστε το icloud και πειραματιστείτε με το macOS. Από το πως θα αξιοποιήσετε τα hot corners μέχρι την αλλαγή των χρωμάτων της οθόνης όταν βραδιάζει, υπάρχουν άπειρες επιλογές. Για παράδειγμα, δεν χρειάζεται να κάνεις double click σε ένα αρχείο για να δεις τι περιέχει, απλά κρατάς πατημένο το spacebar και το macOS σου δείχνει το preview του αρχείου. Επίσης υπάρχει debate για την ανάλυση της οθόνης που θα συνδέσετε στο Mac Mini, δείτε διάφορα tutorials στο youtube. Προσωπικά έχω την 4Κ οθόνη μου σε λειτουργία "Looks like 1080p" (δηλαδή retina). Είναι κρύσταλλο και τα εικονίδια ή το text δεν είναι μεγάλα (βρίσκω τα tutorials υπερβολικά σε αυτό το θέμα). Αν μπορείτε να βρείτε οθόνη που να είναι active hub θα σας λύσει τα χέρια.
Το βρίσκω εξαιρετικά δύσκολο να ξαναγυρίσω σε Windows PC. Η εμπειρία μου είναι άριστη και πραγματικά αν το βρείτε κάπου ειδικά σε αυτή την τιμή, το παίρνετε με κλειστά τα μάτια.
