The Sophora is a deciduous tree from the Fabaceae family. In China, three pine trees were planted during the Tang dynasty to symbolize the positions of the three princes, who were high-ranking officials at the imperial court. Since then, they are considered symbols of power and professional advancement.
It was brought to Japan as a medicinal tree during the introduction of Buddhism. It is an auspicious tree that is carved into masks and placed at the gates of demons to ward off evil spirits. Later, the word "enjun" was used for this tree, which is valued as the "tree that brings happiness" and is said to be blessed with long life and safe childbirth.
The wood is hard and durable, with a beautiful, heavy texture that gives it a unique appearance. Since ancient times, it has been used as a precious high-quality wood for the decoration of temples and shrines and for traditional arts.
