In October 1923, the Czech Quartet of Leos Janacek asked for "something to compose." This prompted the creation of his first String Quartet. The work was inspired by Tolstoy's "Kreutzer Sonata" (which the author wrote under the impression of Beethoven's famous Violin Sonata). Janacek had earlier read Tolstoy's narrative in the original Russian. Even then, it had motivated him to compose, resulting in the creation of a Piano Trio in 1907 and 1908, which was later lost. Janacek's String Quartet is a masterpiece of the nearly seventy-year-old composer. With this work, he began a process that continued into the twilight of his life with the composition of the second Quartet "Intimate Letters."
