Gynerium is a unique ornamental plant, also known as cortaderia, originating from Central and South America. It is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches a width of 1.5-2 meters and a height of 2-3 meters. Its thin long leaves start from the base of the plant and are complemented by long flowering stems that form a distinctive dense “tuft” of the silvery-yellow gynerium flowers at the top.
The flowering period of gynerium lasts from late summer until mid-autumn. It belongs to the same family as wheat, barley, corn, and bamboo reed. It is a dioecious plant, with plants bearing only male or only female flowers. Gynerium is quite resilient and does not require special care.
It prefers mild climate areas and thrives in most soil types, although it favors light sandy soils with good drainage. It is recommended to plant it in sunny locations for good growth and abundant flowering, while it can also grow in semi-shaded spots with less flowering.
Gynerium is sensitive to high temperatures and strong winds, so it is preferable to place it in sheltered locations. It can also be planted in pots or window boxes, with the selection of fairly large pots for proper development.
The cut long flowers of gynerium, which exceed one meter in length, have significant ornamental and decorative value, as they can be preserved in a vase for several months.
