This review is about the bundle: Kit (RF-S 14-30mm F/4-6.3 IS STM PZ)

For the price, unbeatable! A camera aimed at aspiring filmmakers, or professionals who want a solid solution for low-budget jobs, and more. If you don’t make videos or don’t plan to make any at all, this isn’t for you. Of course, it’s not bad for photography either: it has a good burst rate and shoots 12-bit RAW with serious autofocus.

Now, onto video. C-log (10-bit), and God bless. The dynamic range and noise handling may not be at particularly good levels, but this camera, with an f/2.8 lens (f/4 at the very most), can shoot video at 25 fps at night on the street or even in a nightclub (tested), and footage that can be sold, as long as you know how to work with log properly. ISO 6400 is pushing it, but it can handle it, and with a little noise reduction you’re good to go. The base ISO is 400, unlike the company’s other cameras, which are at 800. Based on what I’ve seen so far, you could even shoot a wedding or baptism with this camera, especially if you kit it out appropriately.
The footage also matches very well with other Canon cameras in log; I’ve tested it with the R6.
Sufficient inputs to let you build a small rig. Of course, it’s hard to find a monitor that won’t disable other functions (as far as I know, only Atomos monitors are suitable). But with a setup like this, you’re on a budget, so at least initially, you can skip the monitor.
False color and focus peaking, very serious tools for proper filmmaking.
It fits very easily on almost all gimbals (depending on what lens you have on it, too). I use it with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 and a Viltrox speed booster or a regular Canon adapter on a Feiyu Scorp Mini 3 Pro, with a cage and microphone to add weight at the back so it can balance (it’s a small gimbal, so it doesn’t have much leeway), just about, but with a full range of movement.
Speaking of the cage, it’s a must for even a little ergonomics, because the camera doesn’t have a good grip on its own, and so you can attach a couple of things to it. The SmallRig cage for this camera costs less than cages for most other cameras, so it’s a small expense.
Small and lightweight, especially considering its video capabilities.
The autofocus is excellent here too, with plenty of settings, whether you’re using RF or EF lenses. With the 17-40 I mentioned earlier (a 20-year-old lens), it has made me look like a pro even in very low-light conditions.

The 14-30mm PZ lens is decent, but because its aperture varies as you zoom, it gets darker, which means it’s pretty much useless when shooting in log, given that you want to stay at ISO 400, 800, 1600, and so on. If you don’t shoot in log and use auto ISO, or if you shoot in well-lit spaces and f/6.3 is enough for you, then it works. It’s worth getting as a kit if you don’t have a backup lens or want something that fits easily in a bag/small bag. The camera has a power zoom button anyway, which is for this lens, so it’s a good match.

I’ve written a lot of details, hoping to help someone who had this camera in mind or is looking for a budget camera for filmmaking/video. Don’t be afraid of it; it’s a little gem. At this price, there’s nothing better. Even if you find a better camera used, I think all the other things you’ll need will cost a lot more, whereas with the R50V, they’ll be more affordable, and you’ll have a great package to get started.
