The period of the National Resistance was the most significant time in the life of Dimitris Tsatiris. The events recounted and the effort to revisit them, nearly 30 years later – from the early 1980s – whether from memory or through interviews with his comrades, as well as with the factual elements he had at his disposal – such as ballots from the local elections of 1944 in Andros – illustrate the intensity and the internal experiential dimension that these events had on his overall political and social formation.
This book attempts to write the history of the National Resistance in Andros, in other words, historiographically, we follow the shift from analyzing the central narrative of the Resistance and its protagonists to studying individual or collective subjects that are not considered decisive factors or important players.
The entire effort of studying at the local level represents a shift of focus from the central political scene to the regional elites, and from political history to social history. Moreover, the history and the relationship between the personal experiences of historical subjects and the events in which they participate may represent the most fascinating aspect of our theoretical inquiries.
