Description

The table fish species originating from Sri Lanka live in dark areas, in streams and small lakes with sufficient flow and dense plants. They belong to the order Cypriniformes, family Cyprinidae, and subfamily Cyprininae. Synonymous names include Capoeta titteya, Barbus titteya, Barbus frenatus. They are schooling fish, so it is recommended to keep them in groups. They are timid fish that require a dark substrate and many plants, preferably Vallisneria sp. and Cryptocoryne sp., to avoid stress and to enhance their coloration. Additionally, the presence of roots is beneficial to create more and better hiding places. Males, especially during the breeding season, display a much more intense red color than females.
