Endemic species of Lake Malawi. It is found on the western shore of the lake between the areas of Charo and Chizi Point, as well as on the eastern side between the areas of Cape Kaiser and Lumbaulo. It lives in the deeper and rocky parts of the lake, at a depth of about 25 meters, while it is very rarely found at depths less than 10 meters.
