The hazel tree (C. avellana) is a deciduous plant that reaches up to 5 meters in height. It tends to take on a bushy form due to the growth of suckers from the collar area.

It is a monoecious plant, meaning it has separate male and female flowers but on the same plant. The flowers are exclusively wind-pollinated and develop before the leaves, on one-year-old branches. It blooms from mid-December to late February, depending on the variety and region.

The ripening of the hazelnuts, depending on the region and variety, occurs from August to late September. The hazel tree begins production after the 4th year and reaches its maximum production by the 12th year. It can remain productive for over 50 years, especially in bushy cultivation forms, as it is easier to replace old branches with new suckers.

Average yields are 200 kilograms of hazelnuts (with shell) per stremma (30 trees x 7 kilograms).

The fruit-bearing trees are available in 3-liter pots and pruned to a height of 1.20 meters for ease of transport.
