Soutzouk loukoum is a traditional sweet widely produced in Komotini. It is characterized by its softness and tender texture, sweet taste, and pleasant aroma. It contains walnuts and is sprinkled with shredded coconut at the end.

The preparation process has ritualistic elements:

• Whole walnuts are threaded on a string one by one.
• A ground mixture with water and sugar is boiled in a cauldron.
• The strings with the walnuts are dipped into the mixture and hung to freeze and stabilize.

The caramelized, amber color of the loukoum decorates the shredded coconut with which the elongated loukoums are sprinkled.
