I switched e-readers after owning four Kindles since 2012 (the last one was the 2021 Paperwhite).
On the plus side, it has a very good screen with adjustable lighting and color temperature, which helps a lot when reading in the dark.
It also reads EPUBs directly, which are the most widely used ebook format.
It has USB-C and connects easily to a computer, so you can use Calibre to load your own books.
The Kobo website has lots of books (many are free) that download instantly.
The color screen didn’t make much difference to me because I only read books that are usually black and white. I assume it would be useful for someone who reads comics. What I noticed is that the screen is a little darker than the black-and-white Kindles I had, so it needs a little more brightness.
As a result, the one drawback I see with the device is that the battery life is shorter than on Kindles. Mine lasted about ten days with around three hours of reading per day.
I also added Amazon’s fonts (mainly Bookerly), and the text looks quite a bit better.
Another negative is that every two or three days the Kobo would freeze and need to be reset using the switch. This happened with large EPUBs of my own and, from what I read, it happens to others too and is probably due to an incorrectly formatted EPUB. With the help of Calibre, I now convert EPUBs to (K)EPUB, which is Kobo’s native ebook format, and I hope I won’t have this problem again.
I also tried reading PDF files, but the 6-inch screen size is no help at all. You can zoom in on the PDF page, but it’s not suitable for reading a book.
I downloaded a couple of audiobooks from the Kobo website and listened to them with Bluetooth headphones (the device doesn’t have a built-in speaker), but this feature uses a lot of power and drains the battery.
Overall, it’s a very good e-reader for someone who wants to read books and doesn’t want to give money to Amazon.
--- update After three months of use. I’m taking off one star for the battery. It suddenly drops from 40–50% to 2% and freezes. It doesn’t happen all the time, but it has made me anxious, and I keep checking the battery.
As for the frequent freezes, after trying every remedy I could find on the internet, I think I found the solution by deleting all the collections I had created. It hasn’t frozen again since.
--- update 2 After a year and a half, it was still freezing, and the battery lasted two days at most. I installed KOReader and now read all my EPUBs there. Essentially, I no longer use anything else in the Kobo menu. It hasn’t frozen once in the past two months, and the battery is back to lasting ten days, as it did at first.
άλλαξα ereader μετά από τέσσερα Kindle που είχα από το 2012 (το τελευταίο ήταν το paperwhite του 2021).
Στα θετικά είναι η πολύ καλή οθόνη με τον μεταβαλλόμενο φωτισμό και χρωματισμό που βοηθάει πολύ στο διάβασμα στο σκοτάδι.
Επίσης διαβάζει απευθείας τα epub που είναι και ο πιο διαδεδομένος τύπος ebook.
Έχει usb-c και συνδέεται εύκολα με υπολογιστή, οπότε με το callibre μπορείς να φορτώσεις τα δικά σου βιβλία.
Στο site της Kobo έχει πολλά βιβλία (πολλά είναι δωρεάν) που κατεβαίνουν άμεσα.
Το χρώμα δεν μου έκανε κάποια διαφορά γιατί διαβάζω μόνο βιβλία που είναι συνήθως ασπρόμαυρα. Υποθέτω ότι για κάποιον που διαβάζει κόμικς θα είναι χρήσιμο. Αυτό που παρατήρησα είναι ότι η οθόνη είναι λίγο πιο σκοτεινή από τα ασπρόμαυρα kindle που είχα και χρειάζεται λίγο περισσότερο φωτισμό.
Αυτό έχει σαν συνέπεια το ένα μειονέκτημα που βλέπω στην συσκευή, ότι η διάρκεια της μπαταρίας είναι μικρότερη από τα kindle. Εμένα μου έβγαλε περίπου δέκα μέρες με τρεις περίπου ώρες την ημέρα διάβασμα.
Ανέβασα και τα fonts της Amazon (το bookerly βασικά) και βελτιώθηκε αρκετά και η εμφάνιση του κειμένου.
Άλλο ένα αρνητικό είναι ότι κάθε δυο τρεις μέρες κολλούσε το kobo και χρειαζόταν reset από τον διακόπτη. Αυτό γινόταν σε μεγάλα epub δικά μου και από ότι διάβασα το παθαίνουν και άλλοι και μάλλον οφείλεται σε λάθος διαμορφωμένο epub. Με την βοήθεια του callibre μετατρέπω πλέον τα epub σε (Κ)epub που ειναι η native μορφή ebook της Kobo και ελπίζω να μην ξαναέχω αυτό το πρόβλημα.
Δοκίμασα και να διαβάσω pdf αρχεία, αλλά το μέγεθος της οθόνης των 6" δεν βοηθάει καθόλου. Μπορείς να ζουμάρεις μέσα στη σελίδα του pdf, αλλά δεν είναι για διάβασμα βιβλίου.
Κατέβασα και καναδυό audiobooks από το site της Kobo και τα άκουσα με bluetooth ακουστικά (δεν έχει ενσωματωμένο ηχείο η συσκευή), αλλά αυτή η λειτουργία καταναλώνει πολύ ενέργεια και αδειάζει την μπαταρία.
Γενικά είναι ένα πολύ καλό ereader για κάποιον που θέλει να διαβάζει βιβλία και δεν θέλει να δίνει λεφτά στην Αmazon.
--- update Μετά από τρεις μήνες χρήσης. Αφαιρώ ένα αστέρι για την μπαταρία. Ξαφνικά από το 40-50% πάει στο 2% και κολλάει. Δεν το κάνει συνέχεια, αλλά με έχει αγχώσει και κοιτάω την μπαταρία συνέχεια.
Όσον αφορά στα συνεχόμενα κολλήματα, αφού εφάρμοσα ότι γιατροσόφι βρήκα στο internet, μάλλον βρήκα τη λύση με την κατάργηση όλων των collections που είχα φτιάξει. Από τότε δεν έχει ξανακολλήσει.
--- update 2 μετά από ενάμιση χρόνο, τα κολλήματα συνέχιζαν και η μπαταρία άντεχε το πολύ δύο μέρες. Εγκατέστησα το KOReader και πλέον διαβάζω όλα τα EPUB από εκεί. Στην ουσία, δεν χρησιμοποιώ πλέον τίποτα άλλο από το μενού του Kobo. Δύο μήνες τώρα δεν έχει κολλήσει καμία φορά και η μπαταρία αντέχει πάλι δέκα μέρες, όπως στην αρχή.
