Everything changes, day by day, year by year. That’s natural. And strong roots help us not to be swept away by the wind. Once upon a time, there was a little house somewhere far away, in a village. It was a very beautiful, solid, and well-built little house.

The one who had built it so well said: “This little house will never be sold, not for all the gold in the world, and in it will live the great-great-grandchildren of our great-great-grandchildren.” The little house was very happy up there, on the top of the hill where it had been built. It liked to look at the surrounding landscape. It admired the sunrises and sunsets.

The days passed one after another, each a little different from the one before, but the little house remained unchanged. “The Little House,” awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1943, is a story that shows children, in terms they can understand, the growing difference between modern city life and traditional life, closer to nature.
