The plants are inside shells. This is a plant with a completely different morphology from other air plants. It is an epiphyte with very small and narrow leaves, and its flowers, which do not have particular ornamental value, are yellow-green and very small, yet highly fragrant, as this attracts pollinators.

It grows on trees and is quite widespread throughout the American continent, in tropical and subtropical regions, found at altitudes from 0-3300 m. In some cases, it can reach 30 m in length.

It is one of the few air plants that tolerate locations with full sunlight as well as partial shade. It is entirely covered with specialized trichomes to absorb water and nutrients from the air, resulting in any atmospheric pollution being reflected in the plant, making it an excellent indicator of air pollution. The role of the trichomes, among other things, is also to reduce water loss and reflect intense light.

It prefers a humid environment and grows near rivers and lakes, but it also survives in dry climates as it has mechanisms similar to those of succulents.
