Review this product
  • My go-to solder for the last 20 years. It belongs to MacDermid, which is a giant in the field of electronic consumables and metals/fluxes/etc.

Category ROM1. Rosin - Organic - Medium activated - Halide containing (1). It means it has the "strength" to eat through oxidation that ROM0 and ROL0 fluxes cannot. The downside is that if you don’t have ventilation or an extractor, in 20 minutes you’ll feel like you smoked 20 cigarettes at once and your throat will hurt for the next 3 days.

As a solder, it is considered the golden standard along with Kester 44, which belongs to the same parent company. Alpha markets it for professional hand-soldering applications, which is a very formal way of saying "the alloy is very pure and behaves in a predictable way".
What it does well, and what matters to the average technician, is the speed at which it wets, which is... very fast, instant fast. It also behaves in exactly the same way on all pads and pins.

The flux remains active for a fairly long time, ~4 seconds, and its residues are transparent, hard, and non-sticky, while coming off immediately with isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush - cotton swab.

The soldering iron tip stays clean, it doesn’t build up carbon or burnt flux. On average, I’ve noticed that I clean the tip every 50-80 pins depending on the oxidation.

In short, very good solder, reliable and predictable, but expensive and hard to find.
