This large evergreen tree reaches a height of 20-30 meters, with glossy and waxy leaves that release the characteristic camphor scent when crushed. In spring, it blooms with clusters of small white flowers and produces black fruits about one centimeter in diameter.

Among other uses, it is also used as an insecticide.
