A thin girl walks along the dusty road carrying a large, round box. She is Lopi, who will soon find herself working as a maid in the house of the wealthy Giorgaras family. The family is preparing to welcome Stefanos Plousios, who is destined to become the husband of Eleni Giorgara. Life, however, often follows its own course, and so Stefanos will ultimately ask for the hand of Eleni’s younger sister, Stefania.
Stefania is led into this marriage by family pressure and social expediency, without true feeling, even as she has met Leonidas, a young man with whom she shares many interests and for whom she has felt a romantic attraction. After her marriage, she is taken to the Castle of Thyramia, a dark, harsh, and stifling place, where she feels trapped.
Meanwhile, as Lopi grows up, she calls upon her sharp mind and abilities, observes, learns, and gradually transforms her life completely. As often happens, sooner or later the paths of the heroes cross again. A captivating historical novel centered on people’s efforts, and especially women’s, to define their lives in a world that restricts them.
