Astrophytum myriostigma ("Bishop's Cap") is a decorative Mexican cactus with a geometric star shape, 5 rounded ribs, and a silver surface covered with thousands of white spots. It is spineless and easy to care for, blooming with large yellow flowers in the summer. Native to dry areas of northern Mexico, it is ideal for beginners in the world of cacti.
Care Instructions
- Light: Direct or very bright indirect light. Best exposure is on south, southeast, or southwest facing windows. It tolerates 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily, but if it has been grown in lower light, gradually acclimate it to strong sun.
- Watering: Very rarely — this is the secret recipe for cactus success. During the growing period (March-October), water moderately every 2-3 weeks, only when the substrate is completely dry. In winter (November-February), almost no watering — light watering every 4-6 weeks is sufficient.
- Humidity: Tolerates dry air well — no need for spraying or humidifiers.
- Substrate: Special substrate for cacti and succulents, very airy with excellent drainage.
- Temperature: Very tolerant — survives between 5°C in winter and 35°C+ in summer. Ideally 15-25°C during the growing period.
- Fertilizers: Special fertilizer for cacti and succulents, diluted to half strength, once a month during the growing period.
- Repotting: Very rarely — every 3-5 years, in spring, in pots only slightly larger.
