Agave potatorum cv. Ouhi-Raijin variegata – Agave
- Family: Agavaceae
- Pot diameter: 8.5 cm
- Variety origin: Japanese selection of *Agave potatorum*
- Maximum size: Height 15 cm, spread up to 20 cm
- Toxicity: Mildly toxic – keep away from pets
The variety *Ouhi-Raijin* combines the strict geometry of the species with impressive color variations in the leaves. Cream stripes alternate with mint green, and the spiny edges give it a striking appearance. The compact rosette foliage is noted for its ornamental value and slow growth.
Care:
- Light: Abundant light, ideally with sunlight
- Watering: Very sparse – only when it is completely dry
- Temperature: Hardy to 5°C, ideally above 12°C
Ideal for shelves, rock gardens, and zen compositions, as well as for collections of miniatures or rare agaves. Placing it in a spot with light all day and protection from rain is recommended, ideally in a pot on a balcony, shelf, or table.
The variety spreads slowly and can only be propagated through careful grafting or offsets. It belongs to the subgenus *Littaea* and exhibits schematic reproduction through offsets. The leaf margins develop strong fibers and spines to deter herbivores.
Studies indicate CAM metabolism with stomata opening at night for water conservation. Grafting is done on *Agave americana* rootstocks for faster growth.
