Epiphyllum guatemalensis - Epiphyllum
- Family: Cactaceae
- Pot Diameter: 12 cm
- Height: 20 cm
Its name derives from Greek and literally means "upon the leaf," indicating the origin of the flowers, which bloom directly on the "pseudoleaf." Although it lacks spines, it is a cactus-like plant and is considered an epiphytic plant, meaning it grows attached to other plants, using them solely as support: it can draw the nutrients it needs from the moisture in the air, through appropriate aerial roots. Some varieties grow anchored in the soil, but their roots are too small to meet their moisture needs, which is why they also use aerial ones. This genus has waxy stems, long and flat (which give it the nickname "mother-in-law's tongue") with marginal notches: they appear to be real leaves, but they are actually branches, from which the nocturnal flowers bloom - another value of this spectacular plant. The blooms are very large and impressive (they can reach up to 20 cm in diameter!), with endless scenic beauty: these stunning flowers, combined with the long, thornless branches and their climbing habit, make this cactus particularly appreciated and often used to decorate any indoor space!
Care includes:
- Plenty of light all year round, avoiding direct sunlight mainly during the hottest hours of the day.
- Moderate watering, only when the soil is completely dry.
- It is sufficient to water once a week in spring and summer, reducing to once every two months in autumn, and stopping completely in winter.
- The ideal soil is very well-draining and porous, such as a mix of peat and stone, so that water doesn't stand still.
- Frequent fertilization is not required, just dilute the fertilizer during watering once a year.
