“Autofiction is fiction made up of strictly true events and happenings.” This is how Serge Doubrovsky, who coined the neologism “autofiction,” defines the literary genre in which factual and fictional narratives intersect on the basis of a pact of lies between author and reader, in contrast to the pact of truth that underpins autobiography.
Playwright Sergio Blanco candidly dissects his own autofictional writing, exposing the mechanics of self-sabotage at work in his authorial “I.” In the first part of the book, he presents a historical overview of writings of the self, tracing the thread from Socrates and Saint Augustine all the way to twenty-first-century postmodern fiction. In the second part, he sets out his personal theory of autofiction, offering a “Decalogue for an Autofictional Endeavor” based on his plays.
As Blanco confesses: “In the end, I am not the one who writes; it is my writing that writes me. And this is my form of resistance: to exist as a fictional character who writes himself as an act of survival.”
