Description

Description

For the first time in Greek, a general introduction to the religion that has shaped a vast part of Indian as well as other cultures and that influences the lives of millions of people around the world. Hinduism has developed as a succession of forms taken throughout history, which coexist today under this collective name.

Starting from the civilization of the Indus Valley, the author traces this evolution through the early Vedic period, the Upanishadic monism, the ascetic movement, and the development of theism with the rise of the personal gods Shiva, Vishnu, and Devi.

Emphasizing, as modern religious studies dictate, more on practice and everyday life than on texts and theory, it describes forms of yoga, but primarily everything concerning the religious life of the majority, the worship practice, the rules governing its life, the institution of caste, the issue of the pure and the impure, etc.

Based on the trends of scientific research that follow a revision of Hinduism, the book also serves as an overview of the relevant, contemporary scientific scene.
