It was October when Edgar Allan Poe learned the outcome of a literary contest he had organized in 1833 by the Baltimore magazine Saturday Visitor. He received the news with mixed feelings. He was excited because one of the stories he submitted, "The Bottle Imp," had won the fiction competition, but also disappointed because another of his works, a reflective free verse poem titled "The Colosseum," did not place in the poetry contest. Always highly competitive, Poe took his defeat hard. The judging panel had selected "The Colosseum" as the best poem, but since they had already awarded the "Bottle Imp" as the winning prose piece, they gave the poetry prize to the creator of "The Song of the Winds," an unknown Baltimore poet named Henry Wilton. Poe's disappointment turned to anger when he discovered that Henry Wilton was a pseudonym for John Hill Hewitt, editor-in-chief of the Visitor.
