Description & Specifications

"A Sad Tale" by F. M. Dostoevsky was first published in 1862. This story serves as a harsh satire of the bureaucratic figures of the liberal reform period in the early 1860s.

The author did not believe in the sincerity of the statements made by the high society figures regarding their readiness to help the common people, to contribute to the development of social progress, and to establish the principles of humanity.

The main character of the story is the figure of General Pralinsky, who sees himself as a person of humanity and a proponent of the new liberal ideas. However, an unpleasant event confirms the words of the "reactionary" Nikiforov, that Pralinsky "will not endure" the role he has taken on.

F. M. Dostoevsky leads the reader to the conclusion that the liberal ideas of such "practical" people with new perceptions do not align with their very nature, which is revealed through their actions.
