
Spyros Iakovidis
Spiros Iakovidis was born in 1923 in Athens. He obtained a degree in Archaeology from the University of Athens in 1946 and a doctoral degree in 1962. He worked as a curator of antiquities for two years (1952-1954) but primarily focused on teaching and excavation. He taught archaeology at the University of Athens (1970-1974), the University of Marburg (1976-1977), the University of Heidelberg (1977), and the University of Pennsylvania (1979-1991). He was also a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, USA (1977-1978). A member of the "Archaeological Society at Athens," Spiros Iakovidis was also affiliated with several other institutions such as the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies, the British School at Athens, the Société de Préhistoire Française, the German Archaeological Institute, and the Historical and Ethnological Society, among others. He was honored with the Medal of National Resistance and the Grand Commander of the Order of the Phoenix. In 2008, when he celebrated his 85th birthday and marked 50 years of participation in the Mycenae excavations, his students, colleagues, and friends honored him with the volume "Doron," featuring studies on Mycenaean archaeology. He passed away at the age of 90, having lived a full life and accomplished much.
