Eleanor Porter

Eleanor Hodgeman Porter was born in Littleton, New Hampshire, on December 19, 1868. She attended local schools, received private tutoring at home, and eventually studied at the New England Conservatory, where she was praised for her vocal performances in various concerts. In 1892, she married John Lyman Porter and moved to Massachusetts. Her first novel, "Cross Currents," was published in 1907. In 1912, "Miss Billy" was published and became a bestseller. In 1913, her most famous book, "Pollyanna," featuring an irrepressibly optimistic young girl, was released and achieved immediate success. In 1960, the book was adapted into a film by Disney. Two more of Porter's books, "Pollyanna Grows Up" and "Just David" (1916), also became bestsellers. Eleanor Porter passed away in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on May 21, 1920.
