Agios Nikolaos o Kavasilas

Saint Nicholas Cabasilas was born around 1322 in Thessaloniki and passed away between 1391 and 1396. A child of devout aristocrats, he was a friend of distinguished figures and a student of the best Hellenists. His spiritual guides included great hesychast fathers of the 14th century, such as Isidore of Pelusium and Gregory Palamas. He studied in Constantinople from 1335 to 1340, focusing on classical studies, philosophy, rhetoric, the sciences (mathematics and astronomy), law, and more. He was actively involved in politics as an advisor and collaborator of Emperor John VI Kantakouzenos, vigorously defending the rights of the poor, while continuously studying and writing. It is not historically confirmed whether he served as the Archbishop of Thessaloniki. His works, numbering over thirty, are the fruits of his deep and original synthesis. Some of his most significant writings include "The Life in Christ," "Interpretation of the Divine Liturgy," and "Homilies on the Mother of God." Although Cabasilas grew up and lived in the atmosphere of European humanism, he managed to absorb its healthiest elements and integrate them, after transforming them, into Orthodoxy. He was canonized in recent years, and his memory is honored on November 29th.
