
Nikolaos G. Kontosopoulos
Nikolaos Kontosopoulos was born in Athens. He holds a Ph.D. in Philology from the University of Athens, with a dissertation on the Cretan dialect. He served for 35 years at the "Center for the Compilation of the Historical Dictionary of Modern Greek" of the Academy of Athens, where he was the Director from 1989 to 1990. Specializing in Modern Greek dialectology, he studied Instrumental Phonetics and Linguistic Geography in France. He conducted linguistic studies and research in Greece and other countries, participated in numerous linguistic conferences, and contributed to the preparation of the Linguistic Atlas of Europe being developed in Nijmegen, Netherlands. He is a member of Greek and international linguistic societies and the author of approximately 70 linguistic studies and six linguistic books, including the Linguistic Atlas of Crete, The Influence of French on the Greek Language (in French), and the two-volume work "Languages and Dialects of Europe."
