Georgios G. Mitsopoulos

Georgios Mitsopoulos (1912 - 2013), a legal scholar and member of the Academy of Athens, was born in Trikala, Thessaly. He studied at the Law School of the University of Athens, where he earned his doctorate in 1947. He practiced law and in 1953 was elected as a lecturer in Civil Procedure at the University of Athens, became an associate professor in 1956, and a full professor in 1969. He served as a legal advisor to the National Bank of Greece and was a member of the Revision Committee for drafting the new Civil Procedure Code. He held the position of Deputy Minister of National Economy in the caretaker government of G. Theotokis (1950) and Minister of the Interior in the caretaker government of Karamanlis (1977), as well as Rector of the University of Athens (1975-1976). He was an honorary doctorate recipient from the Universities of Tubingen, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and Erlangen-Nurnberg, and an honorary professor at the University of Athens (1999). He served as President of the Academy (1999) and President of the Union of Proceduralists. His main independent works include: "The Declaratory Action in Greek Procedural Law" (1947), "Probabilistic Reasoning in Civil and Procedural Law" (1952), "Studies in General Theory of Law and Civil Procedural Law I" (1983), II (1997), "The Problem of the Concept of Legal Fiction" (1998): "Le probleme de la fiction juridique" (2001, Academy of Athens edition). Honors: Commander of the Order of the Phoenix, Grand Commander of the Order of the Phoenix (1976), Grand Commander of the Order of Honour (1999).
