Georgios Papadimitriou

George Papadimitriou was born in Thessaloniki in 1944. He studied at the Faculty of Law of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and later at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. He was a professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Athens. Between 1972 and 1975, he collaborated with the Max Planck Institute. During 1973-1974, he was an external associate of Deutsche Welle. In 1975, he became an assistant in the Chair of Constitutional Law at the Faculty of Law of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) until 1979, when he was appointed as a professor at the Faculty of Law of AUTH, a position he held until 1983. In 1976, he began practicing law. From 1996 to 2004, he served as Legal Advisor to Prime Minister Costas Simitis. He was the Prime Minister's representative at the European Union Assembly for drafting the Charter of Fundamental Rights (1999-2000). He led the Working Group monitoring developments in the Cyprus issue (2000-2004). In September 2007, he was elected as a Member of Parliament through the State List with the PASOK party. George Papadimitriou passed away at the age of 64 in February 2009.
