Georg Simmel

Georg Simmel, a German philosopher, sociologist, and cultural theorist, was a pioneer of the ecological approach to the city. He taught philosophy for many years as an unpaid adjunct professor at the University of Berlin before securing a position as a full professor at the University of Strasbourg four years before his death. Despite being marginalized by the academic community, his thought had a significant impact on his contemporaries. Along with Ferdinand Tönnies, Werner Sombart, and Max Weber, he founded the German Philosophical Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Philosophie) in 1909. In 1900, he published his magnum opus "The Philosophy of Money," followed by "The Tragedy of Culture" and "The Philosophy of Modernity." In 1903, "The Metropolis and Mental Life," a fundamental text of urban sociology, was published.
