
Agelos Delivorrias
Angelos Delivorrias was born in 1937 in Athens. He studied archaeology and history (1956) at the University of Thessaloniki and graduated from the University of Athens. He began his postgraduate studies in 1964 at the University of Freiburg/Breisgau and, in 1965, after successfully passing a competitive examination, he was appointed to the Greek Archaeological Service. He initially served at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens under the guidance of Christos and Semni Karouzos and later as a curator in the Ephorates of Antiquities of Achaia and Arcadia-Laconia.
In 1969, with a scholarship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, he began his doctoral dissertation at the University of Tübingen, which he completed in 1972. Between 1972 and 1973, he continued his studies at the University of Sorbonne and the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes. From 1973 to 2014, for 41 years, he directed the Benaki Museum, overseeing its radical renovation, which he completed in June 2000. For the organization of the new exhibition spaces, he received international recognition and was awarded the gold medal of the Academy of Athens. In 1992, he was elected Professor of Art History in the Department of Theatre Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens, and from 1998 to 2003, he served as the director of the postgraduate program in the same department. He retired from the University as an emeritus professor in 2005. His articles and papers have been published in numerous Greek and international editions.
He passed away on April 24, 2018, at the age of 81.
