
Giannis Skarpelos
Yiannis Skarpelos is a sociologist and a professor of Visual Culture Studies at Panteion University. He studied sociology at Panteion University and completed his doctoral dissertation with a scholarship from the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) in the Department of Communication and Mass Media at the same university. He has been teaching in the Department of Communication, Media, and Culture at Panteion University since 1996. His academic focus is "Image, Communication, and Culture." He has served as the Director of the Graduate Program in "Cultural Management" and as Vice President of the Department of Mass Media, while from 2014 to 2016, he was the President of the Department of Mass Media. He has also taught in the interdisciplinary graduate program "Psychology and Mass Media," and since 2004, he has been teaching in the graduate program "Management of Cultural Units" at the Hellenic Open University. He has authored the books: "Terra Virtualis: The Construction of Cyberspace" (Nefeli, 1999), "Historical Memory and Greekness in Comics" (Kritiki, 2000), "Image and Society: From Documentary Photography to Visual Sociology" (Topos, 2012), "The Uncertain Points" (Topos, 2019). He is a member of the International Visual Sociology Association and served on its Board of Directors from 2002-2005 and 2012-2018.
