Mairi Mpairaktari

Mary G. Bairaktari is a distinguished Doctor of the Department of French Language and Literature at the University of Athens, a scholar of the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY), specializing in French Theatre (from the perspective of Theatre Semiotics) and Translation Studies. She has taught dramaturgy, theatre theory, and terminology in undergraduate courses of the Department of French Language and Literature at the University of Athens as an appointed Lecturer (P.D. 407/80) for two years and has participated in a series of lectures in the postgraduate course of the Literature Department of the same University titled "Theory of Theatrical Discourse." Since 2018, she has been teaching literary translation in the Department of French Language and Literature at the University of Athens. Her scientific research focuses on theatrical discourse and its stage presentation, as well as on the theory and practice of theatrical translation with the aim of the functionality of the translation on stage. Since 2017, she has been conducting postdoctoral research in the Department of Theatre Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (under the supervision of Associate Professor Ms. Aikaterini Diamantakou). Regarding her published research work, her doctoral dissertation titled "The Translations of Marivaux by Andreas Staikos and Their Performances in Greece" (supervised by Professor Ms. Marika Thomadaki) was published with a scholarship from the Saripolion Foundation (2016). Her monograph titled "Fragmentation and Reconstitution of the Character in Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt's 'The Night of Valognes'" (Symmetria Publications, 2010) received the Kautatzogleio Award 2012 from the University of Athens, while in 2016 her performance research titled "La dramaturgie de Maurice Maeterlinck en Grèce. Focus sur les 15 premières années du 21ème siècle" (Gramma Publications) was published. She is also a member of the Hellenic Centre of the International Theatre Institute (since 2010) and a researcher at the Centre for Theatre Semiotics (since 2000), and she has collaborated for several years with the European Centre for the Translation of Literature and Human Sciences and the National Book Centre. In the field of translation, she has completed an internship at the Translation Department of the European Commission in Brussels and a two-year study of literary translation (specializing in theatrical translation) at the European Centre for the Translation of Literature and Human Sciences with instructors such as Titos Patrikios, Andreas Staikos, Stratis Paschalis, Vangelis Bitsoris, and other significant translators from French to Greek. Additionally, she has attended a creative theatrical writing seminar with Andreas Staikos. Finally, she participates in international conferences with lectures on theatre and literary translation, publishes related articles in scientific journals, and has translated works by Bernard-Marie Koltes and Joel Jouanneau, which were presented as part of theatrical readings, while her translations from French (such as J.-K. Huysmans, "Mr. Bougran Retires," Marivaux, "Love Makes Harlequin Refined," Christian Petr, "Thieves of Life," "Tragic and Tragedy in the Age of Globalization" [contribution to the translation of a collective work]) have also been published.
