When does Lent 2026 start?

Kyra Sarakosti is one of the oldest customs related to the celebration of Easter. It symbolizes the 7 weeks from Clean Monday until Holy Week.

The Easter fast in 2026 begins on Monday, February 23, 2026, which is Clean Monday.

In most regions, Kyra Sarakosti was a paper drawing of a woman who looked like a nun. She had 7 legs, crossed arms, and no mouth because she was fasting. Starting from Clean Monday, every Saturday that passed, one leg was cut off, so people knew how many weeks remained until Easter. On Holy Saturday, her last leg was cut off and the paper was hidden in the bread baked for the night of the Resurrection. Whoever found the paper leg in their slice of bread was considered to have good luck.
