Buyer's Guide for Exercise Bikes

Thinking of buying an exercise bike, but don't know what to look for?

Come and see everything you need to know before buying, based on the use you intend to make of it.

1. Type

Based on their construction, there are 4 main different types of exercise bikes. 

  • Spin Bike: They support both seated and standing positions. They are mainly used in gyms for spinning classes. 
  • Recumbent: They are designed with back support and offer a comfortable workout, which makes them a suitable choice for recovery as well.
  • Pedal exerciser (Mini Bike): A simple solution for cycling training. It can be placed in various spots thanks to its small size.
  • Upright: It is designed without back support, so for use it is necessary that the exerciser sits upright.

2. Maximum user weight

Pay attention to this! For the machine to function properly, the user's maximum weight should be 10-12 kilos less than the factory maximum user weight.

3. Operating mode

There are different ways an exercise bike operates, taking into account its power source and resistance.

Magnetic (Manual)

The resistance on the flywheel is magnetic. Because there is no direct contact between the magnets and the flywheel, it does not wear out.

Resistance adjustment is manual and does not require a power supply.

Air Resistance

Also known as Air bikes, these bikes have a fan instead of the traditional flywheel. 

The resistance is not adjustable, but is proportional to the effort, meaning the more intensely you pedal, the greater the resistance will be.

4. Extra features

  • Foldable: So you can store them super easily! 
  • Tablet/Mobile Holder: So you can enjoy your favorite series and not miss a single one of your notifications.
  • Wheels: So you can move it easily around the space.
  • Bottle Holder: After exercise, when you want water, you want it NOW. That’s why it’s a good idea to always have a bottle next to you!

1. For small spaces

If you have limited space but want an exercise bike at home, start by choosing a folding one, so you can fold it up after each use. Also, make sure it has wheels so you don't have to lift it for storage!

2. For beginners and advanced users

If you want to give your best effort in exercise every time and want a bike that is suitable for both beginners and advanced users alike, we would recommend looking at air resistance bikes, also known as air bikes. They do not have specific resistances, but they are based on effort, meaning the harder you pedal, the greater the resistance will be.

3. For rehabilitation & older ages

In these cases, you need a comfortable bike. The best choice is a recumbent bike. It is ideal for the elderly, overweight individuals, or people recovering from injuries, as the seated position does not strain the knees, supports the back, and offers greater comfort.
