Hair removal machines: Buying guide & tips
Which hair removal device should I choose? Epilator or IPL? Which is best for my needs?
There are two main types of devices for hair removal at home. The classic Epilator, which removes hair from the root, and the IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) devices, which use light to stop hair growth.
#SkroutzTip: If you want hair removal on the face or bikini area, choose a device that includes special, smaller attachments (heads) for these sensitive areas.
Let's see how each one works!
1. Epilator
Epilator hair removal devices Epilator have small tweezers that rotate quickly and pull the hair from the root. Modern devices now feature dozens of tweezers for faster results, as well as massage attachments that "distract" the nerve so you feel less pain.
Advantages:
- The skin stays smooth for up to 4 weeks.
- Over time, hairs grow back thinner and softer.
- They work on every skin type and every hair color (even very blonde or white).
Disadvantages:
- They cause a slight pain or stinging sensation, especially the first few times.
- They may cause bumps if hair gets trapped under the skin.
#SkroutzTip: Choose a Wet & Dry device. Hair removal in warm water hurts much less because your skin's pores are open!
2. IPL Devices (At-Home Photolysis)
IPL devices use gentle pulses of light that "put the hair root to sleep." With repeated use, hair stops growing for a long period of time.
Advantages:
- It is an almost painless method.
- It offers the longest-lasting result (months without hair growth).
- It is the solution if you suffer from pimples and irritations caused by shaving.
Disadvantages:
- Does not work on very blonde, red or gray hair.
- Most are not suitable for very dark skin tones.
- Requires a schedule and consistency in the first sessions.
#SkroutzTip: Before you buy, check if the device has a skin tone sensor. This automatically adjusts the light intensity so you can be sure your skin won't get irritated.
What is integrated cooling?
It is a feature mainly found in IPL devices (photolysis). The head of the device freezes (sometimes reaching 10°C) at the same time as it emits the light.
- Why it helps: As the light heats the hair root, the cooling immediately soothes the skin.
- The result: It eliminates the burning sensation and makes the process completely painless, even in the most sensitive areas.
What is Wet & Dry?
This refers to classic hair removal machines (epilators). It means the device is 100% waterproof and works without a cord.
- Why it helps: You can take it with you in the shower or bath. Warm water softens the skin and opens the pores, so the hair comes out much more easily and with less pain.
- Extra Tip: It is super easy to clean under the tap!
For Face
The skin there is thin and the hairs are more "stubborn".
- Epilators: You need a device that comes with a special facial cover (an attachment that limits the area with tweezers) or a specialized small facial device (that looks like a pen).
- IPL: You should make sure the device is certified for facial use (they usually have a special filter to protect the eyes) and has a special small head for precision above the lip or on the sideburns.
For Sensitive Area (bikini)
The pain is greater here and the skin gets irritated easily.
- The best choice: IPL devices are considered top for the bikini area because they don't pull the skin and stop annoying ingrown hairs (folliculitis).
- If you choose an Epilator: Definitely look for a Wet & Dry model (for use in water) and check if it includes the attachment for sensitive areas that covers part of the tweezers so it doesn't "pinch" a large area of skin at once.
In summary: If you are afraid of pain, go for an IPL with cooling. If you want something affordable and quick for everywhere, get a Wet & Dry Epilator with many attachments.
Bonus Tips for Perfect Results
Before & During:
- For Epilator: Do not apply cream before use. The skin should be dry and clean.
- For IPL: You must shave the area 1 day before, so the light goes straight to the root and does not burn the hair on the surface.
- Do a scrub (exfoliation) 2 days before hair removal so all the hairs come to the surface.
- Hold the device at a 90-degree angle and do not press it hard against the skin.
After Hair Removal:
- Apply a moisturizing cream or aloe gel to soothe the skin.
- If you did IPL, avoid tanning beds and strong sunlight for 48 hours and use sunscreen.
- Clean the device head with alcohol so it is ready and hygienic for next time!
