DIY Ornaments for the Tree with Salt Dough
Salt dough is my favorite material when I want to spend calm, creative moments with my kids at home.
This year, with my little helpers, we will make Christmas ornaments for our tree!
The materials you will use
For the dough:
Three cups of flour, one cup of fine salt, and one cup of tap water
- Vanilla powder
- Food coloring or tempera paints
- One basin, one rolling pin (children's rolling pin for little hands) and one baking tray
-
Christmas cookie cutters or silicone clay stamps
- children's kitchen aprons with hats (to make it more fun)
- Christmas ribbons
How to Make Christmas Tree Ornaments
- First, pour three cups of flour and one cup of salt into a bowl, and mix with your hand.
- At this point, add a little vanilla powder, just to give your ornaments a "sweet" aroma.
- Then, add one cup of water, stirring constantly. The dough should become firm, but still easy to shape. So, you may need to add a little more water.
- If you want to use food coloring, divide the dough into smaller pieces and color each one with a different shade.
I prefer to leave the dough in its neutral color, so my kids can paint them later with tempera paints.
- Give the kids a rolling pin and a piece of dough, and help them roll it out into thin sheets.
- Using cookie cutters, make beautiful Christmas ornaments.
- Alternatively, make little balls with the dough, flatten them, and create designs with Christmas stamps!
- With a straw, make a small hole at the top.
- Put the ornaments in the oven and bake for at least half an hour, until the moisture has left the dough.
- Once they harden and cool, give the little hands tempera paints so they can paint them any color they want.
- Finally, thread Christmas ribbons through the holes and hang them on the tree!
Salt Dough - Christmas Edition
The process of making salt dough ornaments with your kids is super creative, relaxing, and fun.
It feels like making cookies out of modeling clay!
Only now, you use simple ingredients from your kitchen... Flour, salt, and water!
Just like we make Easter decorations with salt dough, in the same way, but with more sparkle, we make Christmas tree ornaments with our little elves!
Happy crafting!
