I think the vacuum cleaner, the air conditioner, and the washing machine are by far in my top 3 household appliances, with an honorable mention to the microwave oven!

It all started, as they say, in 1860 when the American Daniel Hess invented a manual suction sweeper! This sweeper was called a "carpet sweeper" (in our free translation) and did not operate with electricity!

At the bottom of the sweeper, there were brushes that rotated when you rolled it on the floor (like wheels) and collected the dust. At the top, the sweeper had a bellows (which resembled an accordion) that then sucked the dust inside! In the following years, other such models were released but they did not receive the brightest reviews from the public!

At the end of the 19th century, there were cleaning services that started using huge cleaners which were transported by horses on the streets to clean houses! These cleaners had hoses that did not suck up the dust, instead, they blew strong air outwards to remove the dust, gathered it in one spot, and then collected it!

In 1901, however, British engineer Hubert Cecil Booth and American inventor David T. Kenney managed to construct such cleaners with hoses that could FINALLY suck up the dust instead of blowing air (similar to what vacuum cleaners do today)!

These cleaners were also huge and were dragged by horses! Through the windows of the houses, they placed the long hoses of the machine and sucked up the dust from the carpets, walls, and ceilings of households! However, this cleaning service was a luxury with one visit costing as much as the annual salary of a domestic helper!

From 1905 onwards, portable dust-sucking sweepers began to appear on the market, with the first being manufactured in the United Kingdom!

In 1907, the first portable electric vacuum cleaner was invented in the USA! However, we had to wait until the end of World War II for vacuum cleaners to stop being luxury items and start entering middle-class households!

By the end of the 20th century, technology had advanced significantly and so had vacuum cleaners! Around that time, rechargeable hand-held sweepers began to appear, and in 1997, we were introduced to the first autonomous and wireless robotic vacuum cleaner!
