The 6 Most Beloved Christmas Movies of the 80s and 90s
Do you perhaps belong to the Generation X, the Millennials or the Generation Z? What are these, you might ask. Let me explain!
- Generation X includes those born between 1965 and 1980.
- Millennials are all of us who were born between 1981 and 1996.
- And Generation Z are those born from 1997 to 2012.
If you belong to the first and second categories, you probably already know what I have to suggest. So get ready, because a wave of nostalgia is about to hit you right in the face.
If you belong to the third, don't get ready, you can simply check out what old-school movie gems you've missed, to fill the gap. And if you don't belong to any of the above categories, then ok boomer!
Relax, unwind, and celebrate this Christmas with the most nostalgic and top movies of the 80s - 90s! Note, I have them arranged in chronological order!
1. Trading Places (1983)
We start strong with Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd, two top actors, truly at their best. The movie is a comedy, but it also conveys deeper messages; social, political, and racial.
Two brothers, wealthy elderly businessmen, disagree on whether the development of a person's character is influenced more by the environment they grew up in or by their genes. And what could be more logical than to find out who is right by placing a bet? To swap the lives of two completely opposite people.

2. Die Hard (1988)
Well now, Christmas without Die Hard (Die Hard), like a Greek salad without feta. It just doesn't happen.
After 35 years, the movie remains epic and, of course, fits perfectly with the holiday spirit since the story unfolds on Christmas Day. A New York cop, generally disillusioned with his own life, is called to help his (almost estranged) wife along with other hostages who have been kidnapped in a building by terrorists during a Christmas Eve party in Los Angeles.
The movie is epic, Bruce Willis stars in the role of John McClane, and here's a fun fact for you: it was his first "serious" movie in a role opposite to what he had been used to playing until then, and it was this movie that established him in the category of action heroes.
Of course, due to its huge success, 4 more movies followed. And if you're in the mood, you can naturally make it a marathon. A total of 10 hours and 14 minutes!
- Yippee-ki-yay, motherf*cker!

3. Scrooged (1988)
And just like March from Lent, Scrooge from Christmas is impossible to be absent. And he is not just any Scrooge. He is the beloved Bill Murray.
A cynical, ill-tempered, and miserable television producer, he treats everyone badly, including his loyal employee, fires people on Christmas Eve, avoids his brother every year like the plague who just tries to invite him to eat together during the holidays. And of course, he is the perfect target for the 3 spirits of Christmas!
- The b*tch hit me with a toaster!

4. Home Alone (1990)
Yes okay, I think we've all seen it, I don't think there's a person who hasn't seen it at least twice in their life. It's more likely that you've seen it 100 times rather than none. And that's one of the reasons why this movie is on our list. Watching a movie over and over again means it definitely did something right. And this particular one, let's not kid ourselves, is a masterpiece.
Even though it doesn't make much sense, let's talk about the story; a family with 5 children (11 in total with the cousins) goes on vacation to Paris and leaves behind the youngest of the house, 8-year-old Kevin (Macaulay Culkin). And as if being left alone wasn't enough, he has to protect his house from burglars!
- Keep the change, ya filthy animal!

5. Batman Returns (1992)
What happens when you combine Tim Burton with Michael Keaton, Michelle Pfeiffer, Danny DeVito, and Christopher Walken? I'll tell you. This eerie, dark, and simultaneously humorous universe of Gotham City is born. The story naturally takes place during the Christmas period and is as follows:
From the damp and foul-smelling sewers of Gotham City, the Penguin (Danny DeVito) emerges to the surface. Meanwhile, a woman finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time, resulting in the birth of Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer). And poor Batman (Michael Keaton), as if he didn't have his own personal problems, now has to deal with not one but two enemies.
- Why is there always someone who brings eggs and tomatoes to a speech?

6. While You Were Sleeping (1995)
And so we have reached the end! Last movie, so I left you something light for the closing. It's Christmas, we are eating without a tomorrow, let's not make it too heavy! A romantic movie starring the excellent Sandra Bullock, the plot is as follows:
An incurably romantic lonely young woman falls in love with a handsome young man she sees (from afar) every day, as he goes to work. Until the young man has an accident, the woman saves him, the young man falls into a coma, and the woman is mistakenly considered to be his fiancée. A real mess!

Movies are a way to relax or spend our time pleasantly, but Christmas movies have the magic to transport us to a world full of wonders, love, and hope, making us escape from the daily routine and discover the spirit of Christmas.
So, stock up on all the necessary goodies, sit comfortably with a delightful Christmas movie, and I wish you happy holidays!
