Description

Description

Emperor Julian, a writer of the 4th post-Christian century, is a particularly remarkable case of a man who in the few years of his life (a total of thirty-three) accomplished a great deal, under conditions that did not give him the mental comfort to become a writer of a large number of works. His intellectual education was fruitful and led to the production of works that show he studied many texts of ancient Greek literature and integrated his effort into the framework of the so-called "second sophistic". From a philosophical point of view, he belongs to the realm of Neoplatonism. He is undoubtedly a very interesting figure in history. He was judged with severity (and not without some injustice) and his name was accompanied by the terms "apostate" or "transgressor". It is true that the context of the non-Christianized world until his time did not suit him. His theological-philosophical views were deeply influenced by Mithraism, a trend that was dominant in the years that constitute the transition between the Roman and Christian worlds. In this respect, they do not differ from his divine Constantine, the so-called Great, the founder of Constantinople, and from Constantius, his cousin, the emperor who succeeded her in a short-lived exercise of imperial power.
