This book originated from my interest in palatial architecture and the literary symbolism of a Byzantine emperor who responds, as much as any other pre-Renaissance ruler, to Burckhardt's idea of "the state as a work of art."
My interest was further deepened when I realized that this "universal man" was neither an exhibit of Byzantine culture nor a key figure in the traditional study of European history. The chapters that follow are the result of my long pursuit for the broader context in which the cultural phenomenon of Manuel Komnenos should be placed.
