The classic Opinel pocket knife. Sturdy, reliable for small tasks (not a survival knife), the locking mechanism is very good and for the price, it's the best. It comes sharpened and the blade doesn't wear easily (depending on usage).

Value for money! Excellent knife. Simple and user-friendly.
I have been using it for fishing and hunting for years now and I have no complaints.
You don't need to spend a fortune to have a reliable tool.

I have Opinel in mind as the Morakniv but for softer tasks. It is the best value for money I have found for this price. Specifically, I use the No8 daily for cutting fruits or whatever else is needed in cooking. I always take it with me on hikes for small tasks (Attention though, it is not a survival knife). It is quite good at maintaining its blade. Bonus is the locking mechanism of the blade, so you don't have to worry about it closing on your hands.

Very good knife, the size is just right. The handle doesn't fit as nicely in the hand. It comes sharpened like a razor and it's easy to sharpen it again. It's worth its money, maybe even the best choice in this category/price range.

Good for cutting meat, with two hits on bone it made teeth, so not for many! For its price, it's fine!

Good construction (sturdy), with a very durable blade and user-friendly handle.
Perhaps - for the use I make (cutting plug tobacco) - I would prefer the thickness of the blade to be half a millimeter smaller.
Overall, I would characterize it as value for money, as its price was below 10€.

Specifications

  • Blade Length: 8.5 cm
  • Blade Material: Sandvik 12C27M stainless steel
  • Handle Material: Beechwood
  • Safety System: Virobloc ring
  • Total Length: 19 cm (open)
  • Weight: Approximately 45g

Features

  • Inox Blade (Stainless): Made from modified Sandvik 12C27 steel. Offers excellent resistance to corrosion (rust) and does not require special maintenance, unlike carbon blades.
  • Yatagan Shape: The blade has the traditional "Yatagan" shape, inspired by the Turkish sword, with a curved tip that ensures strength and cutting efficiency.

  • Virobloc Safety System: The locking mechanism consists of a rotating stainless steel ring. It allows the blade to be locked in both the open position (for safety during use) and the closed position (for safety during transport).

  • Ergonomic Handle: The beech wood handle is durable, comfortable to hold, and features Opinel's classic finish that protects it from moisture and dirt.

Opinel

All Opinel products are manufactured 100% by the company itself in France. The blades of Opinel knives are made from high-quality metals that, with the help of special heat treatment, allow Opinel knives to achieve maximum durability under any conditions. The entire process takes place in a strictly controlled temperature environment. The metals reach a temperature of 900°C and are then rapidly cooled. This sudden change in temperature results in increased metal strength. The blade manufacturing process includes four important stages: cutting, which is done with a 120-ton press; “baking” of the metal, which varies depending on whether the blade is made of plain or stainless steel; sharpening, which is performed semi-automatically; and finally, polishing and finishing.

The handle of each knife goes through two very important processing stages: cutting and shaping, starting from a simple rectangular piece of wood, and finally varnishing, which guarantees the wood’s high resistance to moisture. Finally, handle and blade are joined with the special ring (Opinel patent), which is placed without the use of machines, one by one, to ensure the absolute safety and reliability of each knife.

To protect it from the wear of time, the following “tips” should be followed:

  • Prolonged exposure to a humid environment is not allowed.
  • The blade should be thoroughly cleaned after each use.
  • The blade needs to be oiled at regular intervals.
