In the 20 Letters of St. Basil the Great that are contained here, this remarkable ecclesiastical figure, writing to political leaders, reveals his true concern for the social and daily issues of Christians. His letters are filled with kindness.

In the two Homilies of St. John Chrysostom "On Eutropius the Eunuch, Patrician, and Consul," delivered in the year 399, he defends the persecutor of the Church and Eutropius himself, who had been removed from the prime ministerial position and had sought refuge, as a suppliant, in the asylum of the cathedral of the City (an asylum that he himself had abolished). St. John Chrysostom points out the vanity of earthly matters, the frequent and unpredictable changes in human life, and the necessity of leniency and forgiveness.

He finds, of course, the opportunity to develop other interesting topics in his Second Homily.
