Description

The problem of good and evil, with a specific reference to the question of whether the world is governed by God or the devil, is an old yet contemporary issue. There have always been and continue to be people who wonder why often the unjust, the thieves, the sinners in general prosper, while the good are tested and suffer.

Others believe that the devil has great power and that man cannot resist him. Some pose the question of why God does not eliminate Satan so that we can "be rid of him" once and for all, or they easily place the blame for their sins on God because He allows the devil to act.

In response to these and other related matters, St. John Chrysostom provides a vivid and convincing answer through his three Homilies included in this volume. With logical and Scriptural arguments, drawing also from his experience as a shepherd, he persuades every well-intentioned reader.

The Homilies were delivered in Antioch around 388, when he was still a presbyter. [Excerpt from the text on the back cover of the edition]
