Description

Description

"Introduction to the Art of Cinema" is one of the most important and recognized introductory studies in the analysis of the cinematic medium, a teaching manual useful for university departments in the field.

The book examines the creation, functioning, and reception of cinematic films or documentaries with the goal of raising the analytical and interpretive skills and generally the attention of the viewer.

The authors analyze cinematic genres, production, narrative form, technique (mise-en-scène, editing, cinematography), and the style of the film work, providing examples of film criticism and evaluation, as well as a brief overview of the history of cinema.

They combine technical information with necessary theories, addressing both the methods and creations of filmmakers from international productions during the 20th century and the great theorists of the art of cinema.

Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, Spike Lee, Martin Scorsese, Dziga Vertov, and other directors provide examples of cinematic composition with their films, while movies such as "The Wizard of Oz" or "Citizen Kane" are examined regarding the different ways of narrating a story or the semantic levels that each film may contain.

How a film is made, how it functions as a whole, how we analyze it critically, or how the art of cinema changes throughout history are issues that introduce the reader to the aesthetics of cinema, encourage the student in research, sharpen the perception of the average viewer as well as the cinephile.

Because, as the authors say, "sitting in a dark cinema watching an exciting film, we might find it difficult to remember that what we are seeing is not a natural object, like a flower or an asteroid. Cinema captivates us to such an extent that we tend to forget that films are products of construction. To understand the art of cinema, one must first recognize that a film is produced by both machines and human labor."
