Eastern Karipidou was born in 1961 in Kozani. Her family resides in Ardassa, Ptolemaida. Her grandparents were from the region of Chaldia in Pontus.

She is a teacher, serving in the city of Thessaloniki. She is married to Christos Nella and has two children, Ioanna-Maria and George-Andreas. She is a member of the board of the Association of Pontic Educators.

She is a certified teacher of the Pontic dialect, which she teaches in the Lifelong Learning departments of the municipality of Thessaloniki. She is a member of the writing team for the online courses of the Pontic dialect developed for the Pontic Studies Committee.

She engages in poetry under the pseudonym Athena. Her poems have been published by the University of Macedonia Press, titled “COMPOSITIONS” in 2006. In 1980, she was awarded for her work “The Spiritual Grandeur of the Pontic People and Their Expressions Through Song, Dance, and Way of Life” by the Ministry of Education.

Her involvement with the Pontic dialect, as well as the "Odyssey" of the Pontians, was the impetus for writing this work.
